We drove to Bryan, Texas, last night and "boondocked" at Cracker Barrel. We had breakfast there this morning. There were weather warnings for severe storms and a tornado watch until 1 p.m. so we spent the morning at McDonalds charging up and working on the blog, etc. When the tornado watch expired, we headed to Iola, in nearby Grimes County.
This was the home of James Benjamin Franklin (the brother of Henry Franklin) and his wife Mary Chapman and their family. It was also the home of Dr. James Theophilus Hill, who married two of the daughters of A.J. Womack and Rebecca Franklin. After the first wife (Sarah Womack) died, Dr. Hill married her sister, Mary Ann. After AJ's death, Rebecca went down to help with the children. She died while there.
This is a very remote cemetery, but we found it! Here are some photos from Zion Cemetery in Grimes County, Texas.

Dr. J.T. Hill and his wives- Sarah and Mary Ann Womack
Runie Maud Hill, the daughter of Dr. J.T. Hill and Mary Ann Womack, was buried in nearby Madisonville in 1954. Her son William Womack Heath, was a friend of Lyndon B. Johnson. He became a county judge, secretary of state of Texas, and U.S. Ambassador to Sweden.
James Benjamin Franklin, the youngest brother of Henry Franklin, moved his family from Rankin County and settled in Tyler County Texas before 1848. AJ Womack and Rebecca Franklin likely stayed with his family in Town Bluff when they came to Texas in 1852. James Benjamin and his family also moved on and were in Grimes County by 1857. |
